Dxtory has stopped working (error)
« on: May 15, 2013, 07:17:29 am »
Hi, so just recently my Dxtory has been a real pain in the ass lately.
Not sure what caused it, but I'm guessing it was either Comodo or something else.
I've checked, and it doesn't say anything about any blocked programs, so I'm not sure as to why Dxtory is acting this way.
If someone who is trusted on here could teamview me that would be great.

I get this error:

Probably, it seems that COMODO is the cause.
Or other security software is the causes.

Korey, how you solved this? Unistalling Commodo (not an option for me though...), or by creating a rule?

I don't think so. Same thing happens when I debug with QT Creator. I found out the solution for QT Creator 2 years ago. Didn't connect the dots so i had to find this thread do have an "aha" moment. :)
Same solution works for DxTory, to make it work one have to rename/delete a file.
Code: [Select]
C:\Windows\SysWOW64\guard32.dllI do NOT recommend that because its a security file for comodo. Eventhough defence+ hips or whatever is disabled, guard still protects against dll injection and makes babies cry. DxTory crashes when it tries to inject its dlls for directx I guess.

I'm gonna find me another firewall. I liked comodo and have used it for many years. But the recent shiny pretty skin makes it worse for me to handle it aside from this guard incident :(

I'm gonna find me another firewall.
After some looking around I managed to get Dxtory to run while Comodo firewall is enabled. Set your firewall to custom ruleset. After that go into your advanced setting, click firewall, then application rules. Add Dxtory.exe to the rules and then right click it and choose edit and make sure the "Allow All Requests" tickbox is checked off. That combined with adding Dxtory's folder to the exceptions lists for Defense+'s behavior blocker and shellcode injection blocker made it so the program starts up for me just fine without crashes now.

To start off click "Tasks" here:

Next click "Firewall Tasks" then the "Open Advanced Settings" button.

In the advanced settings click "Application Rules" under the firewall rollout.

If Dxtory is there right click its entry and click edit. On that page click the "Custom Ruleset" radio button then tick "Allow All Requests" then click OK.

If Dxtory isn't there you'll want to right click the pane and choose "Add" and then click the "Browse" button in the top right and choose "Files".

From there you will want to navigate to where you installed Dxtory and choose the Dxtory.exe file and click open. For example here's where I have it:

After that is done click OK. For some reason the "Allow All Requests" tickbox doesn't show up until you click OK then you need to right click Dxtory's entry and click edit then follow the instructions above and tick the "Allow All Requests" tickbox.

After you have done that you will want to click the "Defense+" rollout and click the "Behavior Blocker" tab.

From there tick the "Define exceptions for behavior blocking" and "Detect shellcode injections" tickboxes. After that click the blue underlined "Exceptions" link at the end of "Define exceptions for behavior blocking". From there right click the pane and choose "Add"->"Folders". From there navigate to your Dxtory folder and click OK then click OK on the "Manage Exceptions" window. Repeat the same steps after clicking the blue underlined "Exceptions" link at the end of "Detect shellcode injections".

After that click OK on the advanced settings window and click the "Home" button in the top right. Back on that page set your firewall to a custom ruleset by clicking the underlined grey text across from where it says "Firewall" and click the "Custom Ruleset" option.

After that Dxtory should run just fine for you. Hopefully this helps anyone who comes across it. And if ExKoder knows which specific files to add to the exceptions lists rather than the entire folder, I'll update this post with those.

Probably would be a good idea to make ^that post a Sticky thread or something, that comodo-issue keeps popping up several times every week.

If a moderator or admin wants me to post it as a separate thread or wants to repost it themselves as a sticky, that's fine with me. The more people it helps, the better.
