Title: Dxtory stops recording when I alt tab.
Post by: Tyler Serafin on March 04, 2016, 03:11:12 AM
Originally my issue was dxtory said INIT when recording CSGO, I fixed that by putting Scaling on Size and at 1920x1080.
It would record CSGO if my CSGO Resolution was 1920x1080 but I play CSGO at a lower resolution because it makes targets bigger. After fixing that issue, I came across a new one. Everytime I am recording and I alt tab, my recording stops, when I tab back in a new recording starts. Is there a way to fix this?

Here is the information you need. Please let me know if you need anything else!

I'm pretty sure it is working as intended when a game is in true full screen mode.   Simple solution = Window mode

Here is some info if you want an idea of what is going on
http://www.howtogeek.com/181761/why-pc-games-struggle-with-alttab-and-how-to-fix-it/

Also a comment from Jim the main developer of OBS

yeah works fine when game is in fullscreen, when I alt-tab the video stops recording, starts a new video once I tab back in. That's unexceptable and I don't want my game in windowed mode, especially as sometimes I stream and record. The software shouldn't have this problem, and I should've been aware before buying the product if it did. I wouldn't have bought Dxtory if I knew it would do this.

Yes, OBS freezes a stream when alt-tabbed. Once back into the game it unfreezes, I am well aware of that, and I fully expect that to happen. I would not expect OBS to stop my stream when alt-tabbed and restart it when I tabbed back in. Is there a way of creating Dxtory to mimic what OBS does?

It is not possible for Dxtory to mimic OBS because of how these software are designed. Other records like Bandicam is similar to Dxtory's design (meaning alt tab makes them create a new record). OBS is designed in such a way that even without a game running, it can still record "nothing". Alt-tab screws with the game's hooking.

And having to not screw up your game when you alt-tab this is not a selling-point of Dxtory, Bandicam nor many other recording software. This is an oddly specific issue.

Nothing wrong with Windowed Fullscreen. A lot easier to alt-tab without fucking with your recordings at all.

Basically like OBS is recording a Set, and you can put stuff in that set (Game Capture) or other stuff.
It doesn't matter if the Games are active or whatever is in the set, it will just keep recording until you shut it off.

Dxtory and other hooking applications are simply only a Game Capture. OBS Game Capture works the same way there (No the Recorder, just the hook).
And if you hook a  game, you get into it's renderer and you take a copy of the frames and save them into a file.
If the Hook is lost (Alt-Tab) then there is no frames to get, and it simply shuts down and saves (or crashes) etc.

Borderless Window Mode might help here, cause alt tabbing there Can just make it out of focus, which just makes the renderer freeze/pause, just recording a still image.
Not always the case though i think, not really done any testing on this.

Permanent Hook in Dxtory Might help with this as well, and the other one i don't remember the name on, something with Hook as well, that it will detect device detruction or something.

Okay. So there's no fix for this issue? I thought the game used to run fine, and I've seen many tutorials using Dxtory, and when they record the game they mention nothing of windowed full screen, and even when I watch them record there seems to be no problem. Not all games have windowed-fullscreen. Even if they all did, now when I stream I have to use windowed capture instead of game capture, right, or is that wrong? It just shouldn't be this difficult, I've never previously had this problem.

Like I said, this is an oddly specific issue. Have you tried turning on "Check Destruction of Device" under Advanced Setting?

Most people do not alt-tab at all. Even if they wishes to alt-tab for some reason, they could easily stop a record and restart again when they resume gameplay. It's a simple task of stitching recorded videos together in a video-editing software.

What kind of tutorials are you watching? Why don't you give a windowed fullscreen a try and alt-tab and tell us the result? It's really not that difficult. It is how people have been doing for a long time. Even without a windowed fullscreen option, you can always resort to windowed mode if you rather want to alt-tab badly.

You were acting as if Dxtory was made to not pickup the game when alt-tabbed. Checking Check Destruction of Device" did not fix my problem. I put my game in fullscreen windowed mode since you wanted to see, and I understand that it may fix my problem, and your correct, it did, I could of imaged it would. Here's the problem, windowed fullscreen would make me have to change certain settings on my OBS which may not work properly, I plan to stream and record. I also cannot use windowed fullscreen because, well I tested this in CSGO so in CSGO for example when you go in windowed fullscreen you obviously have no choice of the resolution, it goes to your main screen resolution, well I don't play the game at 1080P, not because I can't handle it hardware wise, because I can, but it's much easier to hit targets as they become much bigger in lower resolutions. Do you not have this problem? I think I've been mistaken all this time cause from what you and the other user said I was to believe that everyone has this problem and it's a normal and expected thing. Hopefully we can find a fix, other then windowed fullscreen. I understand most people would just use the windowed fullscreen, but I'm not most people, therefore I am not going to do that. I used to use this software and it worked fine, I'm not to sure what happened.

I've found another person with the same problem as me. Yes fullscreen windowed mode works, it is possible to use, but there are many reasons I don't really want to use it. Anyone know of a way to make the program not lose focus from my games?

Also yes, I consider myself quite a good editor and I can easily edit the videos together but it won't look as good jumping from spot to spot, aswell as I still talk when I'm alt-tabbed and I figure they would be able to hear me, but I guess they aren't, since it ends the video.

I found a possible workaround solution, but it pretty much REQUIRES a dual monitor ( or more ) setup. ** I tried a few scenarios with a single monitor to try and view the desktop with this feature enabled and nothing worked. ** Here is a quote of that it does : "forces the currently active window ignore the "focus lost" notification from the system, so the window's host application continues to "think" that the window remains active."

There are a few programs that have this feature :

Is it specifically only CS:GO? I noticed both of you are running the same game. I tried running a regular fullscreen on another game and alt-tab while recording but didn't encounter the issue you faced. Have you tried other games to see if it's the same?

I have tried multiple games, such as CS:GO, Rocket League, The Division and many others I've played throughout the past week. It's not that I won't use windowed borderless or these programs, it's that people like yourself don't encounter those issues, so I don't want to either.

It may not affect some games, but the ones I tested did create multiple files when alt tabbing out and back in.  It is just the way Windows works unfortunately.  If / when Exkode comes back you can keep poking him for the pause recording feature or maybe try finding an alternative solution on your own.

Here is a link from bcam forums with the same question :

I don't want a pause feature. If it was my choice I would use OBS to record as it gives decent video quality (Dxtory is much better, depending on the Codec) and the file size is amazing, here's my problem, I alt-tab to do a variety of things, and I don't wanna pause my game, I could be alt-tabbing to type into my streams chat if I'm also streaming while recording. I NEVER used to have this problem, all of a sudden I get it.

Tymorafarr what game did you try it on, I have a very large amount of games and I may have the same game as you, I can then possibly try it.

I went and test several games with both Bandicam and Dxtory. I can confirm that yes, CS:GO does causes the videos to cut off after alt-tabbing. Both software does the same thing. I realised that only games that run on DirectX 9 WILL force a recording to stop after alt-tabbing.

Try some games that are known to run with DirectX 11, like maybe let's say, Ark Survival, Black Ops III or Dark Souls 2. They won't stop recording even alt-tabbing.

This seems like an issue on DirectX. Losing fullscreen focus on DX9 applications kills the recording.

Great find! Thank you. Rocket league stops recording for me but not for my friend, is it possible i can run games with directx 9 and he is using 11? Ill try out ark once im home, which is in like two hours. Is it possible to make all my games use directx 11? Csgo did not used to do this which is why i am asking if its possible to change it.

I doubt you can force many games to change their renderer to DX11. Rocket League is indeed DX9. Your friend might be: 1. using windowed/windowed fullscreen 2. using some other software like OBS.

Does he uses a similar setup and same software as you?

Friend is actually someone I had been helping on here and he required further help, very very similar setup. We both have i7-4790k's aswell as GTX 970's he runs 8gigs of ram I run 16, he has 2 HDD's one SSD I have 2SSD's 3 HDD's. You get my point, he was using Dxtory, I forgot to ask if he was using windowed or borderless though.

Just tested it out in ark, still happened where I alt-tabbed and it stopped my recording, when I tabbed back in a new recording start, I then closed the game, so it obviously ended then. So i have two recordings. One for 21 seconds, and one for 4 seconds.

Not everyone has this problem and it's not a directx issue. What do I do to solve it?

Did you manage to ask your friend whether he runs borderless fullscreen?

https://youtu.be/lwoHmenfUOA
I recorded the process using Bandicam fullscreen display while Ark is recording behind with Dxtory. Ark is running at fullscreen, not borderless. Doesn't appear to stop recording at all as you can see after alt-tabbing.

Exactly my point, it doesn't stop recording for you, but it does for me. Therefore there's an underlying issue that is not with direct x.

@Tyler

Your log says you have dual monitors, so is the method I posted on the first page  ( reply #10 ) not viable for some reason ?
Even though dx11 games can produce only 1 file, I think dx9 is a lost cause.

Well if not everyone has this issue, then I shouldn't have it. It isn't related to DirectX cause ARK doesn't work for me, but works for other people.
