Title: Recording Issue with Dxtory (Lagarith) when Using Size Instead of Percent
Post by: brn360 on August 09, 2014, 01:46:20 PM
Hey guys! I am in need of some help with fixing an issue when recording Minecraft with Dxtory. I downloaded the trial along with the lagarith codec in order to evaluate the software before actually buying it. I followed a few youtube tutorials to set it up properly, and during some testing I have come up with this problem:

On the movie tab, when I set Scaling to Percent and use 100%, the video records fine but the framerate drops to about 9 FPS as seen in the video below

http://youtu.be/f2T1MznNLX4 (http://youtu.be/f2T1MznNLX4)

However, when I set Scaling to Size and try to record at 1280x720, the framerate is well over 100 FPS but this happens

http://youtu.be/6Ek7uWyNje0 (http://youtu.be/6Ek7uWyNje0)

If you have any ideas about how I could attempt to fix this, please let me know as I would really like to move from FRAPS to Dxtory if at all possible and I would like to get the highest framerate I possibly can as you can understand. If you need any more information, please don't hesitate to ask.

My PC Specs:
- Windows 7 64-bit
- AMD FX-8150 Eight-Core 3.60 GHz (CPU)
- 2GB AMD Radeon HD 7770 (GPU)
- 10GB RAM
- 120GB HDD for Operating System
- 2TB HDD for Storage (I record to this, Dxtory clocks it at 94MB/s)
- 2 1080p Monitors (I don't know if this could somehow be affecting it?)

Thanks for your help!

Have you used ver2.0.127 ?

update a video driver.

It should be an even number memory.

I will try using  ver2.0.127. I had been using ver2.0.126 because it says it is the stable release but I will try updating. I think my driver is updated already but I will double check

Updating to ver2.0.127 did not help. It still looks like the second video after I record. And my video driver is updated too. I attached the new Environment Information to this post

EDIT: This problem only happens in Minecraft. I tried recording Call of Duty and it worked fine.

I think this error happens, because you are running mine craft not in Fullscreen... because then the resolution isn't 1920x1080... it is about 1920x1012 ;)
Try to play in Fullscreen and then tell me the result please :)

It may be not what is causing your issue, but I don't like your 2GB RAM stick... Usually you should have pair(s) of same RAM sticks working in Dual-Channel module. You have x1 RAM on it's own, which is normally not recommended.

Turning off 2GB RAM stick and making sure other two are working in Dual-Channel module would be a worthy thing to try out if anything else fails.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was actually recording with Minecraft in fullscreen mode and I don't have just a single RAM stick. I had just posted the total amount of RAM (10GB). The 2GB is my video memory. I actually determined that the issue is with the video driver. I updated to Catalyst 14.4 and it fixed the weird stuttering issue when using size, but the framerate is now consistently at about 10 FPS in both modes. It's strange because I know I have plenty of power in my PC especially for 720p. Any suggestions about how to fix this?

Maybe you need to change the setting of the CPU usage for DxTory to all of your CPU threads because Minecraft just uses 2 Threads of your processor and if you set that dxTory also just use 1 or 2 threads you have to less power to run minecraft during recording...

Thanks Bla3kJack but I actually have tried allowing Dxtory to use both 4 of my CPU threads and all 8 of them. I think that this definitely sounds like the problem ExKoder linked me to. If this is the case, is there any way I can rollback to the Catalyst 13.9 driver? And if I do, will this affect the performance in anything else that is already working with Catalyst 14.4? Thanks a lot for your help guys!

If you often record Minecraft then it's worth trying to roll-back drivers. Will it affect other games? Yes it might reduce the optimization of some 2014 released games if you have any on your PC. The fix for that would be simply updating drivers again.

AMD Cataclyst 13.12 (http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous?os=Windows%207%20-%2064) (12/18/2013)
AMD Cataclyst 13.09 (http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/desktop/previous?os=Windows%207%20-%2064) (09/18/2013)

Sounds good! Thanks for the links! Out of anything, I record Minecraft the most by far, so I will try it. Hope it works!

Rolled back the driver to Catalyst 13.12 and... DXTORY IS A BEAST! Seriously, I am getting over 200 FPS while recording at 1280x720@30FPS. That's an insane improvement! My only question is, will there ever be an update that works with Catalyst 14.4? I guess that's probably more of an AMD thing, but its kind of frustrating that I have to use old drivers. Oh well, no problems yet. I will definitely be purchasing the full version of Dxtory ASAP. So do I need to mark this solved or anything?

ExKoder the Admin, would have to research what have AMD messed up with the Catalyst 14.4 and program the hotfix. Since I honestly doubt AMD cares much that their update ruined the performance of some software out there to rely on them.

Well that's unfortunate. Thanks for the help anyway!
