Codec Trouble

When I first got the program, I was able to record and view my videos fine. Using Windows Movie Maker I was able to edit the videos, but I was recording 2 audio tracks and had to rip the second track an reinsert in editing. I don't know what changed, but suddenly no video editing software will open the saved files. I can still watch them but not edit. I've tried WMM, Lightworks and Sony Movie Studio 13. I've installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled codecs from two different sources.

So I guess Part 1 is does anyone know a reputable place I can get some codecs?

Part 2 is, Dxtory will not record with any codec except its own (which my editing software won't open). When I press the key to record it will typically minimize (or crash) whatever game I have open, and Dxtory pops up a blank error window. I have to force close it, then I can check the error log which says (this was using the h.264 codec):

The behavior I think is different with different codecs. I really don't care which I have to use, as long as I can edit my videos afterwords!

I'm trying a couple of things now (different codecs, etc) thanks for your help.

Tried the Lagarith codec, which seems to have worked, and my editing software can open it. This may have solved my problems for now, but I'd still be interested if anyone can tell my why its being funky sometimes.
