Return To Castle Wolfenstein Recording Problem

When I try to record Return To Castle Wolfenstein with Dxtory, the game crashes.
When I try to record the game with Fraps, it does not crash. But I hate Fraps, and Dxtory has more functions that I use and enjoy.
I am not sure what is causing this.

ExKoder

I confirmed that it operated normally.
Your environment has a cause.

Would you explain condition in detail?

Does Dxtory function in other games?

Is security software or a video driver the cause?

RobiePAX

Odd that it doesn't work for you. I've tested this game right now with Dxtory, works perfectly fine under Lagarith Codec or Dxtory Codec. Here's a short recorded video:

Wolfenstein (0:31)

Maybe you have applied some 3rd party changes to the base game such as unofficial partches which are causing the crashes. Or some background software is interfering with Dxtory.

I tried disabling my security software and the game still crashes.

I have no problems with other games.

I did apply an unofficial patch that allowed me to play the game in 1920x1080 resolution. I will try reinstalling the game and not applying that patch.

RobiePAX

I personally didn't apply any patches to the game to run it in proper 1920x1080. I've applied this script to the launch settings:

+r_mode "-1" +r_customwidth "1920" +r_customheight "1080" +cg_fov "115" +set com_hunkmegs "768" +vid_restart

You can find more info how to apply this script here. If you have a Steam version of the game then you must insert the script in Steam - Library - Wolfenstein - Right Click - Properties - Set Launch Options tab.

I was using a non-Steam version of the game.
After uninstalling and reinstalling both RTCW and Dxtory I tried again.
This time, the game wouldn't even boot up if I had Dxtory already running. It's almost as if something is mistaking Dxtory for a hack or something and preventing the game from running.

I decided to buy the game on Steam to see if it makes any difference. I will report back with my findings.

Edit: Update.
I bought the game on Steam. The game will now boot up with Dxtory running. But when I press my record hotkey it crashes.
My firewall is telling me that the game is trying to access the internet when I start recording.
I have tried disabling my firewall but it didn't help.

VidyaSauce

Welp I'm stumped. I'm going to take a break and try some more troubleshooting later.

RobiePAX

Well, I don't really know then either. If I were you I'd try updating all essential software which is being used to operate both the game and Dxtory. Essential software is usually responsible for crashes. Software such as Microsoft Framework, Microsoft Visual C++, Microsoft DirectX, Graphics Card drivers, etc. One of those might be the issue. Make sure they all are also fully updated via Windows Updates.

Also try switching to Dxtory Codec "maybe" your Lagarith one is corrupted for some odd reason.

VidyaSauce

Made sure all of those things were up to date. My graphics drivers did need an update, but that didn't solve the problem. Neither did changing the codec.

RobiePAX

If you already own Fraps then you might give in compromise just for this specific game, and later come back to Dxtory with other games. Unfortunatelly I don't really know why my Wolfenstein works and yours not.

If you do not own Fraps or don't like it then consider trying out a very good free capture software called Open Broadcaster Software.

VidyaSauce

No worries. I do own Fraps. I bought it a long time before I found Dxtory.

I also use OBS a lot as I stream video games quite regularly.

I usually use Dxtory and OBS together. I capture the game with Dxtory, outputting to both a file and a directshow camera, and then I use the directshow camera in OBS. By doing it this way I usually don't sacrifice my framerate or performance and it doesn't feel like I'm streaming or recording at all. It's fantastic.

I was going to stream and record an LP of RTCW for Youtube, and I could still do that I guess, but it's going to be much more of a pain than it otherwise would have been.
I don't think it's a problem with Dxtory though. I think it's a problem with my copy of the game or something on my system which is causing a conflict somewhere.

RobiePAX

That game is just awfully old. Dxtory did record it, but I didn't say it didn't crash. It crashed at least 2 times at random. Fraps uses quite older ways of screen capture, probably that's why Wolfenstein is more friendly with it.
