Not the first time this has happened but makes me not want to use rawcap as I am likely to lose the footage so any help on this would be appreciated.

De-M-oN

Use other codec.

You shouldnt use x264vfw. suboptimal in every direction.

Use Lagarith, DXTory or similar instead.

ExKoder

I think that the problem which occurs when CodecPack etc. are installed.

x264vfw works fine for my purposes while keeping file sizes small so thanks for the comment but thats not the issue as its worked fine before.

I think that the problem which occurs when CodecPack etc. are installed.

I have no CodecPack installed not really sure what "etc" might be could you be more specific?
The only codec I have installed is x264vfw and it has worked fine with that in the past except for the occasional crash and the only way to fix it is to delete the rawcap files.

This is a relatively new install of windows so there isnt much installed that could conflict at this point.

De-M-oN

QuoteQ11: What'st the difference between VFW and CLI?
A: VFW is Video For Windows, an ancient tech created by microsoft (copying some stuff from quicktime), full of quirks and not able to support modern codecs. x264VFW is a ugly hack to make x264 work (more or less) with VFW, hence softwares like virtualdub and its modifications. The use of x264VFW is NOT recommended. x264 VFW is no longer officially supported.
CLI is a general term that means Command Line Interface. The classic console (command prompt) command which is generic and has no limitations like VFW.

QuoteQ19: Can i use VirtualDub or any other VFW based editor to encode with x264?
A: Yes, using a x264 VFW build but VFW is so obsolete and limited x264VFW is no longer mantained by the x264 devs and because VFW and AVI are not properly able to handle h.264 features without some "hacking" that could compromise compatibility, playback and/or editing.

QuoteThe thing about applying the same hacks as was used in ASP is that ASP is bad enough to do that to, but H.264's featureset is much more expansive in regard to B-frames, the B-pyramid, etc. Using said hacks to put H.264 in AVI often isn't sufficient enough to ensure that the audio remains synced, in the case of numerous B-frames and especially the B-pyramid. The only way around it is to disable those features, but that results in benefit being lost. It'll still perform well, but not as well as it could have.

Dont put H.264 in a AVI Container. It isnt recommended at all.

ShavedApe

Maybe you missed it so I will say it again.

It works fine for my purposes and also works fine in dxtory and is not the cause for the crashing I know this because it crashes regardless of codec used. Again thanks for you input but it isnt relevant or needed and you wont make me change my mind about using a codec that does the job perfectly fine for what i need.

De-M-oN

#6
And now you get problems. So you got why avi isnt suitable container for H.264.

Try other codec. Does it work? Yes? Then you know whats your problem.

H.264 in AVI is very unstable and problems may occur often. Now you got this point.

Just dont do that, for fucking sake.

Compress it later with x264cli. Whats your damnit problem with that? It has the advantage that you can use a h.264 suitable container, you get better compression efficiency with x264cli and you dont get any problems..

edit: ok you said it is with other codecs too. Which ones you tried? Does it even not work with Lagarith or DXTory Codec?

But anyway. The absolutely not recommended x264vfw thing stays...

ShavedApe

#7
It has randomly crashed with the dxtory codec yes and lagarith too. It has happened in previous versions of dxtory too I have just never bothered to come here and post.

I don't know why your taking this so hard I don't want to change the codec I use as it serves my purpose why does it matter to you so much? Do yourself a favour and walk away your taking this way too personal.

ExKoder

#8
Isn't Sony Vegas installed?
When the codec contained in it is loaded, the problem on which a program crashes is in the codec.

Otherwise, there may be some unknown cause.

ShavedApe

#9
Yes Sony Vegas is installed but thats an editing program not a codec unless thats the etc??

I said relatively new not brand new install of windows, I have adobe photoshop installed too but seriously are you saying that sony vegas could be to blame?

Ill just not use rawcap its not a big deal dont trouble yourself further dxtory worth a little bit of hassle I guess.

De-M-oN

What he meant is, that also programs may install filters into your directshow system.

May I ask you why you even with the given warnings you absolutely dont want to change your x264vfw thing?

Do you at least capture lossless with x264vfw? Otherwise it would be even more stupid to capture lossy just to re-encode the lossy format again. If thats what you want to do, then you seem to give a shit about your visual quality of your videos. You reduce video quality just for using a wrong codec at capturing.

Using a non-problematic codec would be also a step further to get a solution for your problem. But I assume you wont do that.  :-\

A list of all installed filters may be helpful too.

RawCap reads your videos completely via directshow and if only one filter fails at directshow to decode your video, then it doesnt work.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/installedcodec.zip

This program helps you to give us a list of all installed filters. Run it, go to view -> HTML Report - all items and upload the html.

King Hayve

I had the same problem, this is what I did to fix it, but if you are using a different video decoder it will be different for you.

I went to the start menu and typed "lav" into the search, then clicked on "LAV Video" (This is my video decoder),

Then I went to the "formats" tab at the top, and unchecked Lagarith lossless in the list. (This is the codec I use, you would want to uncheck whatever codec you are using.)

Then I was able to use RawCapConv with no crashes. Hope this helps.
