Title: Need help with choosing codec for gameplay recording
Post by: Stefan_12 on May 31, 2017, 07:31:57 pm
I was using all the time UtVideo YUV420 codec. It gives nice quality but also makes some troubles.

I need to record gameplay at 2560x1440 60fps (or even 12fps for slow motion effects). My HD can write with 195 mb/sec so with UtVideo YUV420 Im loosing frames.

Videos are uploaded to YouTube so later on they are rendered by YT using VP9 codec.

I know that there is H.264 but this one reduce quality quite a lot. Most likely files will be rendered as H.264 and than as VP9 by youtube. I need some nice quality as a source file to do some post production and have some data in file for later rendering to H.264 and VP9 without ending up with final bad quality.

Can somebody recommend me codecs that gives quality (and hopefully file size) something between UtVideo YUV420 and H.264? They need to work smoothly at 2560x1440 resolution 60fps (or 120 fps if thats possible).

Also, will H.264 works good with 2560x1440 60fps?

Thanks!

The UtVideo YUV420 codec is already up there with the best ones. You can try MagicYUV.

A good solution is to buy the same HDD and put both in a RAID0. Or just use Dxtory's raw cap HDD split feature.

H.264 will work perfectly with 1440p@60fps, but I wouldn't recommend it for real-time recording.

Thanks for reply,

Why you would not recommend it, whats the downside?

It's not lossless, so unless your PC got a lot of CPU power left, the quality will suffer greatly.
