FPS Dropping in Recorded File with Dxtory

Hey,

Just a quick question for you guys. Up until about last week I've been using Dxtory without any problems. The last time I used it to record anything was back in June and I haven't had any issues. Fast forward to this month and I tried using it to record and my FPS just drops every 5 seconds. I recorded 1920x1080p at 60 FPS no problem before. I tested out CSS for example and it would drop from 60 fps to 40 fps every 5 seconds and go back up. It's really bizarre to me because this hasn't happened to me in the past, and now I get nothing but issues.

I also tested this with a less intensive game like Stardew Valley and it would record more "fine" but it would go from 60 fps to 58 fps every 5 seconds which isn't as visible. I did notice that when I did a write speed benchmark with dxtory the harddrive I was trying to record on would write for a bit then stop for a second and keep going. It did this at random intervals, whereas my SSD would just go all the way through. Is that to cause of the problem? Why is it suddenly acting like this if it was fine before?

I'm really hoping I can get this solved because I do record things as a hobby and I'd hate to give that up, thanks.

Note that my recording HDD used to have a write speed of 175 MB/s tested by Dxtory and now it went down to ~120MB/s and of course Dxtory was giving me (!) Storage warnings whilst briefly alternating to (!) Encode warnings sometimes, but the storage warning was more prevalent.

Revert back to version 2.0.134 or 2.0.135 to see if the new version is bugged.
If not, you might want to check your hard drive with another testing program, to see if the speed actually went down. That usually happends when it gets fuller or starts to break.

I can try to revert back to one of those versions, but I already tried to revwrt to an older one and had the same issue basically. I did test the HDD though and I can't tell if the speed down or not, all I can tell is that when it's testing the write speed it starts and stops for a second keeps going, stops etc. I didn't get the HDD too long ago either, 1.5 years ago.

That's contradicting. You can use CrystalDiskMark http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskMark/index-e.html.

Well I just don't know if the speed actually went down or something just messed up on the HDD, but here.

Just yesterday it was ~120 and now it went down to like 70.

Edit: Also, when I tested it with Dxtory again it went down to 50.

I tested my hard drive health as well and it says everything is fine, I can run games off it and everything fine, but suddenly when it comes to recording with either FRAPS or Dxtory I get major frame drops in the recorded file.

Something is definitely weird because I just tested an external hard drive and it was consistent throughout the dxtory benchmark while my HDD still keeps doing the weird stuttering.

Ok, so I just fiddled around with my SATA cable and reseated it on my HDD and motherboard, the write speed went back up to 130 MB/s but it still stutters when doing a dxtory benchmark. Should I just replace the whole cable?

Just tested Dxtory and it's still stuttering, but the write speed did improve significantly. I'll try replacing the sata cable tomorrow maybe.

There could be alot of reasons for that. Is the HDD full? Maybe it really is dying (I'd back up important data now). Maybe something is sharing lanes with the SATA port on the mainboard? The cable shouldn't really be the issue here, they either work, or they don't.

Ok, so magically a new windows update solved everything for me. Cool beans. :P

Which sounds really terrible. Microsoft needs to step up their game.

Yeah, I fully agree, at least I can record again though. :L
