Title: Lag when recording - What should i upgrade in my pc?
Post by: Ian on June 09, 2013, 07:54:39 PM
Hello, i just bought DXTory but when i record the clips seem to lag and i also lag in-game.
Since i'm not so smart on computer specs and stuff i was wondering if anyone could help me out with what i should replace in my pc :)

PC SPECS: (Taken from DXdiag)
Windows 7 ultimate 64-bit
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor (6 CPUs), ~3,2GHz
Memory: 4096MB RAM
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580

I got a seperate Harddisk with 1 TB of memory and when i tested it on DXTory it had 30 MB/Sec

If there is more you need to know just write it and i will try to find it.
I hope someone is able to help me so i can get recording without lag ^^

EDIT:

If anyone got any recommendations on other things in my pc which would need an upgrade, please tell me ^^
Maybe you even got a recommendation for what i should upgrade it to? :)

waaaay too slow.

Dont use USB 2 drives for recording. If external drive, then a USB 3 drive connected on a USB 3 Port, or e-Sata, but not that very limited USB 2.

That would only work with Lagarith (settings: YV12

I'm sorry i do not know what a USB 2 drives is or e-Sata or anything >.<
I'm higly uintelligent when it comes to this kind of stuff :/

+ what is a good write speed?

Although a result may be the same, test a speed by CrystalDiskMark.
Is it HDD for exclusive use physically?
"Separate" written by you does not mean that it divided as a logical drive?

I think that spec is a little low except a video card.

~30 mbyte/s is the perfect indication that he uses an USB 2 drive.

And with that its impossible to record in RGB colorspace with no compression and even fullHD.

A further problem I see here is the used filesystem on that drive. He wont record very long if he uses FAT32 which its filesize limit per file of 4 GB.

For the actual configuration (DXTory Codec, RGB, no compression, 30fps, 1920x1080)

your drive must be able to write 178 mbyte/s. Yours has 30. You see the problem?  :P

Record on your internal drive. its way faster than a USB 2 drive.

A seperate HDD is recommended, but not USB 2. A further internal or a external but then USB 3 on USB 3 port or e-sata. If you dont know what that is, google it.

Download Lagarith: http://lags.leetcode.net/LagarithSetup_1327.exe and choose it as your video codec. click on the button next to the codeclist and configure lagarith to yv12 as mode and checkmark multithreading.

ExKoder, I will run a test with that program after i've done exam stuff.
The Seperate harddrive is a drive i got on my table beside me, which is plugged into the pc and power.
So everything in my pc is a little low except my Graphic card or what? :)
If so, got any recommendations for what would be good? ^^

De-M-oN, I will start looking for a usb 3 external then and use the download Lagarith, but what does that codec do better than the standard one? :o

Thanks to both of you for all your help :]

If you buy a USB 3 drive your mainboard must has such USB 3 connectors.
Otherwise the USB 3 Controller of the HDD does a Fallback to USB 2 speed, if your mainboard doesnt support better. And looking at your hardware I highly assume that your mainboard is a mainboard without any USB 3 ports.

QuoteDe-M-oN, I will start looking for a usb 3 external then and use the download Lagarith, but what does that codec do better than the standard one? :o

It uses a far better compression (lossless). Uses somewhat more CPU power but with your actual drive situation you need it.

Uhm i just googled it and it came up with 2
http://www.startech.com/media/pages/university/usb3/USB_3_A_to_B.jpg
is it the A or the B that is used and isn't the A one just a normal USB connector?
And if it's the B one can't you just get and adapter for it?

Srry if this sounds confusing, but i really appreciate your help :)

its A.

Because I assume that your mainboard wont have any usb 3 ports, maybe you just should buy a further internal drive.

http://geizhals.de/686480

This one writes up to 196 mbyte/s. ( I have 2 of them in a RAID 0 running and got me to 350 mbyte/s )

mhmm... so if i buy one of those, put it in my pc in connect it to the motherboard and save to that, it would have around 190 mb/sec, if i understood this correctly ^^

When i've bought one of those or another one, is there anything else in my pc whcih you would recommend getting updraded?

CPU. GPU is ok already.

But change to Intel.

Interesting...  So the "RGB (True Quality)" setting is definitely 24-bit rather than 32?

"32-bit colors" has no more colors than 24-bit, the extra 8-bit are alpha, and GENERALLY in videocapture you don't need that.
